SchloR is an association of activist friends whose goal is to realize a solidary, collective working, housing and cultural project in Vienna. The mission and motivation of SchloR is to create long-term secure and affordable spaces for solidary, self-managed and collective working and living in Vienna – as part of the solidarity network habiTAT, which has adapted the structures of the German Mietshäuser Syndikat (which has been established for over 30 years), for Austria.
The overriding goal of the Mietshäuser Syndikat is to secure the houses by purchasing them but without private ownership, and with a legal structure that rules out resale. This works, formulated at the example SchloR, in such a way: The SchloR Hausverein, in which all residents are members, and habiTAT jointly found a GmbH (limited liability company), which then buys the property. HabiTAT has a right of co-determination in the sale, otherwise the house association can decide independently on all matters.
On a plot of land in Vienna’s 11th district, existing structures will be preserved, further developed and converted, and in the process two businesses – CRAP and TRAP – as well as housing units will be developed.
